Vertical Media Integration

This is a short article explaining how online giant AOL recently bought a popular, independent technology blog called TechCrunch. Apparently, TechCrunch's editor Michael Arrington has been known for being controversial in his coverage, and the author of the article questions whether AOL's acquisition of the blog will mean future stories are subject to AOL's censorship. However, AOL has stated that TechCrunch will supposedly retain "editorial independence."
AOL is a very large part of the even larger Time-Warner media conglomerate, so this article represents a current example of our discussions on media conglomerates' vertical integration of media channels. Time-Warner already has huge holdings in cable TV, magazines, and the internet. Now the internet holdings are a little bigger. All of TechCrunch's writers now work for AOL, and all of its readers will now be contributing to AOL/Time-Warner's market share. And the search for independent media sources gets harder.
