72 Migrantes
This is an interview with Alma Guillermoprieto who is a fabulous journalist, originally from Mexico, who writes on Latin American issues for both the US and Latin American press, and has also published a number of books. She is one of the organizers of an interactive virtual memorial called 72 Migrantes, dedicated to the mass murder of 72 migrants in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas in August.
This is a very interesting article. It was ingenious to create a “virtual alter” for families to observe Dia de Los Muertos because this is such an important spiritual event for Latin Americans. Many of the families want to stay anonymous because they still fear the Zetas. With this website they can observe Dia de Los Muertos from the security of their own home. On the other hand, I wonder if any of these families would have access to the internet in their homes? Several of the killed workers chose to travel to Mexico to work in poor working conditions in order to help support their struggling families. Nevertheless, this website will serve as a voice for those killed in this massacre. It is often that when an atrocity like this happens it is quickly forgotten after the media stops coverage. I applaud the fact that although Guillermoprieto does not have an “internet life,” she chose to lead an online project to raise awareness of the 72 migrant killings.
